Background of the Study

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving technique used in emergencies such as cardiac arrest, drowning, or choking. Timely and effective CPR can greatly improve survival rates and reduce the likelihood of long-term complications following a cardiac arrest event. In Kano State, where emergency medical services may be under-resourced, the role of nurses in providing CPR during critical situations is crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Nurses, particularly those working in emergency and critical care settings, must possess up-to-date knowledge and skills in CPR. However, a lack of training or knowledge gaps in CPR techniques can significantly compromise the effectiveness of emergency care. This study seeks to examine the impact of nurses' knowledge of CPR on emergency care outcomes in Kano State, particularly regarding survival rates and the recovery of patients who have experienced cardiac arrest.

Statement of the Problem

The quality of emergency care in Kano State can be affected by gaps in CPR knowledge and skills among nurses, leading to poor outcomes in life-threatening situations. While CPR training is vital, there is limited research on how nurses' proficiency in this area directly impacts patient survival and recovery in the local context. This study aims to fill that gap and highlight the importance of proper CPR training for improving emergency care outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of nurses' knowledge of CPR in Kano State.

2. To evaluate the impact of nurses' CPR knowledge on patient survival and recovery in emergency care settings.

3. To identify barriers to CPR training and knowledge improvement among nurses in Kano State.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of nurses' knowledge of CPR in Kano State?

2. How does nurses' knowledge of CPR impact emergency care outcomes in Kano State?

3. What barriers do nurses face in acquiring and maintaining CPR knowledge in Kano State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses' knowledge of CPR is positively correlated with improved emergency care outcomes in Kano State.

2. Higher levels of CPR knowledge among nurses lead to better patient survival and recovery rates in emergency situations.

3. Lack of regular CPR training programs and resources negatively affects nurses' CPR knowledge and emergency care performance in Kano State.

Definitions of Terms

• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): A medical procedure involving chest compressions and artificial ventilation to restore circulation and breathing in a person experiencing cardiac arrest.

• Emergency Care Outcomes: The results of medical interventions in emergency situations, including survival rates, recovery, and complications.

• Nurses' Knowledge of CPR: The understanding and ability of nurses to perform CPR effectively, based on current guidelines and practices.
